Astro remains committed to delivering innovation and value to our customers and shareholders. We have been honoured to broadcast the FIFA World Cup for the last two decades and are deeply grateful for the support that has made Astro the Home of the World Cup throughout this journey.
In recent years, the landscape for premium content—particularly sports—has changed significantly. Rising costs, driven by inflation and escalating international sports broadcasting rights, have significantly increased the financial investment required. Meanwhile, rampant piracy has diminished the value of such rights to all legitimate platforms. In particular, the 2018 and 2022 World Cup were extensively pirated events in Malaysia. Additionally, match timings and limited runway left to plan for meaningful campaigns with clients had further diminished the commercial value to justify a reasonable investment for shareholders, nor a price increase for our customers.
While we are disappointed that our fair and competitive bid for the FIFA World Cup was not accepted, we are nevertheless pleased that the FIFA World Cup will remain accessible to Malaysian fans. As we pass the baton to the next broadcasters, we wish them every success in bringing the excitement of the event to Malaysians.
Astro is in discussions with the rights holders to explore opportunities for FIFA World Cup matches to also be carried on our platforms, Astro, NJOI (our free-to-air service), and Sooka. This would significantly extend reach and accessibility to millions more Malaysians at home, on business premises, and on mobile devices.
Astro remains firmly committed to championing the nation’s passion for sport through a balanced mix of premier global leagues, national competitions, and compelling local storytelling. Astro remains an exciting destination for Malaysian sports fans. As the Home of Sports, we continue to deliver extensive coverage of many of the world’s most followed sporting events, including the Premier League, AFC and UEFA Champions League, Formula 1, MotoGP, Wimbledon, La Liga, Bundesliga, major international badminton tournaments, and leading tennis competitions. Together, these events reflect our long‑standing role in bringing world‑class sporting moments and shared experiences to audiences across Malaysia.
In parallel, Astro is placing greater emphasis on nurturing local sports—from grassroots development to national and regional competition. We continue to invest and showcase Malaysian athletes and homegrown sporting events, including the Piala Malaysia Final, BWF Malaysia Masters, Asian Games 2026, Sepak Takraw League (STL), Netball Super League (NSL), SUKMA Selangor, and other key national sporting moments. Beyond tournament coverage, Astro is proud to be more deeply involved through meaningful youth and grassroots clinics—embedding training, skills development, and a genuine love for sports such as badminton, netball, and sepak takraw, while empowering the next generation of Malaysian athletes through a holistic approach.
By amplifying local stories and celebrating Malaysian sporting achievements, Astro continues to strengthen national pride and deepen the connection between fans and their sporting heroes.
