15April 2019, Kuala Lumpur: The 4th Selection Camp of Astro Kem Badminton for 2019 that was held on April 13 at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara received more than 600 children aged between seven to 12. Hopeful talents flocked the nation’s capital from all over the country for a chance to qualify to be trained in the much sought after Astro Kem Badminton.
Since its inception in 2012, Astro Kem Badminton has received more than 15,000 children and has been part of many junior national seeds’ journey in badminton. Astro Kem Badminton is a CSR project meant to identify, train and nurture future badminton players for the nation. Through our programme many national junior players have been identified and trained. Three of such talents are Jacky Kok (17), Muhd Fazriq Razif (15)and Justin Hoh (15). All three of them are Astro Kem Badminton alumni who are now playing for the national junior squad under the Badminton Association Malaysia banner. Jacky, Fazriq and Justin also emerged as champions in the recently held MSSM 2019 tournament. Astro’s aim is to continue to sought out and train such talents to enable the nation to continuously have talents fielded at national and international badminton tournaments.
The Selection Camp is the first layer of selection. The camps are held in six different locations throughout the country with two remaining camps in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and Kuching, Sarawak on April 20 and April 27 respectively. For the year 2018 the Selection Camps received over 3,000 kids with 60 of them being selected to attend a 5-day Intensive Training Camp in Kuala Lumpur. Throughout the Selection Camps and the Intensive Training Camp the participants are selected and trained by a team of head coaches made up of Malaysia’s top former world renowned badminton players, namely; Wong Choong Hann, Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng.
For the younger children, aged between seven to nine, Astro Kasih also conducts a free coaching clinic where they can learn techniques as well as improve their skills and stamina building tips. The Coaching Clinic is organised with the hope these young children will return to try out at the Selection Camp in which they will already have the advantage of learning from the Coaching Clinic.
As a token of our appreciation, existing Astro customers who come with their Astro bill, will be fast-tracked for express registration to the camp. There will also be an Astro Customer Service Counter at the venue for the community to enquire on Astro’s products and services.
